Ethical and Legal Issues for Therapists

At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will:

1) Recognize factors contributing toward an increasingly complex practice environment ripe with ethical - legal concerns/dilemmas; 2) distinguish between morals, ethics, and the law; 3) identify examples of ethical situations versus dilemmas in current therapy practice; 4) review and apply select components of the RIPS Model of ethical contemplation; 5) apply a framework for ethical decision making that includes fundamental ethical principles (action constraints), practical constraints, professional duties/responsibilities, legal duties; and 6) reflect upon and be prepared to create a personal strategy for avoiding legal problems and creating an action plan for dilemma identification, and resolution.

Neural Tension Testing for the Upper Extremity

This course is designed to help participants understand the normal and abnormal mechanics of the upper extremity neural mobility. This course has both lecture and lab components. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1) understand the available evidence for upper limb neural mobility tests; 2) demonstrate and interpret findings of adverse mechanical neural tension testing; 3) recognize normal and abnormal signs and symptoms of mechanical neural tension; and 4) design appropriate interventions for the management of mechanical neural dysfunctions.

Using the SWAG Method of Strength Assessment and Training in Rehabilitation

Strength assessment and training for patients in rehabilitation is often based on the therapist’s intuition and level of experience, without much evidence to support clinical decision making. This lecture/lab course is designed to provide therapists with a scientific basis for assessing the strength of their patients as well as rationale for progression of strength training. Course participants should come dressed to exercise.

Let’s Talk Ethics: Moral Reasoning as a Component of Clinical Decision-Making

This interactive workshop will provide an opportunity to explore such select contemporary ethical issues as the role of morals in ethical decision-making, the therapist’s role as a safety net provider, and abandonment. Reflection and dialogue about sample therapy cases within the framework of our professions’ core documents encompassing fundamental ethical principles and realistic practical constraints will occur. Participants will explore strategies to use when confronted with an ethical dilemma.
