Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences

Kelsey

Program: Bachelor of Science in Radiography

Biography:
I am 22 years old and a senior at OUHSC in Radiography.  I am from a small town just west of OKC. I love to spend time with my family and especially my 9 month old little girl.

What do you like most about the College of Allied Health?
I love how your classmates become your family for the duration of your time here. We make it through classes by helping each other and studying with each other. I would never make it without my classmate’s in allied health.

What or who inspired you to become a Radiographer?
I was in a car accident at a younger age and the Radiographer set my mind at ease, and that is very exciting thinking that I will be able to do the same thing.

What has been your biggest challenge in the program?
The biggest challenges have been juggling two jobs, being class president, senator for allied health, serving on the student advisory board, and trying to make good grades.  If I can make it, then I know that anyone can.  I kept my mind focused and with much diligence I made it. The road where I came from was lined with struggles and obstacles educationally, personally, financially, and especially emotionally. These were all overcame by focus and hard work.

If you could go back before you got accepted into this program, is there anything that you would do differently and if so, what would it be?
I did something that many other students didn’t and I would advise every student to do this.  I took Cadaver Anatomy at another school and felt like my work load for the first semester was bearable when most of the first year Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences students struggled very much with their first semester.

What advice do you have for prospective students who may be thinking about becoming a Radiographer?
I think that every student should do at least 40 hours of observations in the field they are applying to. In Radiography there are specialty modalities and I would also suggest some observations to be completed in these areas as well.

Other comments:
I think that if a person is hard-working, diligent, self motivated, and especially wants to make a difference in a person’s road to recovery, then OUHSC is the place for you. Good luck in all your endeavors!
