Welcome from the Chair

Stacy Anderson, MS, RT (T), CMD

Stacy AndersonWelcome to our departmental website and thank you for your interest in healthcare professions. There are multiple programs within the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences; entry level accredited programs in nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy, radiography, and diagnostic medical sonography, a degree completion program for practitioners of these disciplines, and a graduate dosimetry program. Our graduates work with sophisticated equipment and use critical judgment to produce diagnostic images and to insure safe and effective therapeutic interventions. The graduates provide patient education and translate “high tech” processes into a humane experience. Graduates work with radiologists and also with cardiology, urology, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, and family practice physicians. Graduates provide essential healthcare services in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices.

This is an exciting time to work in our fields. Technical advances and fusion technologies applied to medicine are creating dynamic changes and opportunities to participate in complex and interesting procedures. Nuclear medicine technologists use radiopharmaceuticals, scintillation cameras, and computers to image and quantify physiologic processes throughout the body. Graduates of the radiography program obtain their certification as radiographers and then advanced certification in magnetic resonance or computed tomography imaging, cardiovascular interventional radiography, mammography, quality management or other subspecialties. Radiation therapists interact in radiation oncology centers planning and directing ionizing radiation towards vulnerable cancers. Sonographers may specialize in medical (general), vascular, or cardiac sonography (also known as echocardiography) and provide diagnostic imaging and interventional procedure guidance.

The Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences values its place within the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where our students and faculty participate in interdisciplinary activities and opportunities. The department environment respects all modalities and the individual contributions and strengths of faculty, students, and staff. The department values leadership and service within our professions and several faculty members are national leaders. Our educational programs are recognized nationally and alumnae are located in major centers throughout the United States. Faculty are involved in research related to cardiovascular and systemic disease, cancer development and radiation.

Please contact me if you have individual questions. We encourage you to contact the department for information about tours, admission, programs, faculty, or activities. Best wishes as you continue to explore the exciting field of healthcare.
