Chairman Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
Our academic programs, research, clinical practice, and community outreach initiatives enjoy the richness of being located on two campuses: the Schusterman Center in Tulsa and the Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) in Oklahoma City. Our faculty and students are afforded unique interprofessional learning and research experiences the seven health related colleges of the OUHSC offers and occurs in only four other academic health centers in the United States.
The Department’s professional programs and post-professional programs are conducted in state of the art facilities on both campuses by outstanding faculty, many of whom are board certified and nationally and internationally recognized. Our students interact with accomplished leaders and scholars in our respective disciplines through our series of four endowed lectures and our endowed Center of Excellence, the Lee Mitchener Tolbert Center for the Study of Developmental Disabilities. Our commitment is to excellence in our educational offerings, in our ability to translate research to practice, and our dedication to creating health promotion opportunities in our communities.
Our Department is on the move! We are the only department in the country to offer integrated curricula for our Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy (MOT) and Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree (DPT) students, which prepares them to become leaders in the changing and challenging health care environment of the 21st Century. Learning experiences are routinely complimented with evidence and experience our faculty contribute from their research, clinical practice, and involvement in community health initiatives. Our students learn early the skills and strategies required for being a successful member of a health care team.
Our Department is advancing our professions! Occupational therapy and physical therapy clinicians are studying in our Doctor of Science (DSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. The pediatric specialization of the DSc program is primarily online and the orthopedic specialization has several online courses. The program is designed for students seeking advanced education in evidence-based practice and new theories in teaching and administration. Their culminating academic responsibilities are in their scholarly work and leadership practicum. The PhD faculty mentor students in rehabilitation research topics critical for today’s practice with an eye towards technological and basic sciences advances that also impact on rehabilitation.
