Department of Rehabilitation Science 2008 Continuing Education Program

The Department of Rehabilitation Science is offering a diverse continuing education calendar to meet occupational therapy and physical therapy practitioner needs for continuing education. This year, not only does our department highlight our own faculty, but faculty with expertise from other programs on the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center campus. Courses are offered through distance technology to Tulsa and the Oklahoma City OUHSC campuses unless otherwise noted. Evidence-based Differential Diagnosis for the Upper and Lower Extremities - A Lab Course (A3131)

This course will review the concepts of validity, reliability, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value as they pertain to differential diagnostic tests. Course participants will review and/or learn how to perform various upper and lower extremity differential diagnostic tests as part of a comprehensive physical examination. Lab clothes are required. Class size is limited due to lab.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Function and Integrity: Understanding the Key Role in Lumbopelvic Stability and Conditions Which Manifest as Lower Back Pain (A3134)

This course will give the practicing physical therapist a working knowledge of the critical role that the pelvic floor musculature plays in lumbopelvic stability and how to include pelvic floor muscle training in an exercise program for lumbar spine rehabilitation. Information from this course will allow the physical therapist to ask pertinent screening questions to differentiate between mechanical low back pain and pain from pelvic organ prolapse and to determine when referral elsewhere is appropriate.

An Introduction to Soft Tissue Manual Therapy (A3135)

This course will teach the various types of soft tissue manual therapy techniques and how each fit with general practice. Explanations of current evidence for soft tissue manual therapy as a treatment strategy and indications for soft tissue manual therapy will be presented. Participants will practice soft-tissue techniques that include muscle relaxation through bow-stringing and myofascial release (general and direct techniques) and muscle lengthening through release of facial lines, via Ward-Greenman and Norwegian techniques. An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Visual System: Avoiding a Potential Blindspot in Therapy (A3137)

This course will teach participants the CNS structures and function related to vision and visual perception, the causes of visual deficits, including low vision and the receptive and cognitive components of visual perception related to brain damage (hemispatial) neglect syndromes, the basic screening tools used to determine vision deficits, and what the appropriate choice of interventions is and how to address low vision and visual perceptual deficits necessary for everyday activities.

Electrical Stimulation and Wound Healing (A3143)

This course will provide clinicians with up-to-date knowledge concerning the use of electrical stimulation in wound care. After the course, participants will be able to explain the purposed physiological effects that occur and the level of evidence for applying therapeutic electrical current to promote wound healing, discuss when electrical stimulation would be appropriate for wound healing and design electrotherapeutic interventions for wound healing.

Have you ever had difficulty getting a client to engage in occupational therapy or physical therapy due to depression, anxiety or substance abuse? Many therapists who work in settings addressing physical limitations have clients dealing with traumatic events or mental health issues or diagnoses. The instructor will review ways to deal with psychosocial symptoms and commonly encountered diagnoses (chronic and reactionary) and will outline evidence-based interaction styles and intervention structure for working effectively with clients in all practice settings.

Seating and Mobility to Maximize Comfort and Improve Quality of Life (A3141)

This course will present the basic, entry level principals for evaluating adults for seating and mobility products. The use of assistive technologies by people with disabilities to engage in self-care, work, education and recreational activities continues to evolve. The evaluation and provision of seating and mobility services and devices is an integral part of a therapist’s intervention for people with disabilities. This course will emphasize current research with an emphasis on best practices. A combination of lecture and laboratory experiences will be utilized in the morning for the delivery and assimilation of the information. In the afternoon, various vendors will be present to share with the participants current seating and mobility products that are available to the consumer, and the participant will have the opportunity to critically analyze the products for their professional use.

Enhancing the Therapist: Therapist Assistant Partnership (A3142)

Collaborating within today’s frenzied health care environment can be challenging! What is the legal, ethical and preferred pattern of practice for the therapist: therapist assistant team? Health care providers must deliver exceptional service to produce outcomes that are valuable to the increasingly savvy consumer. A proficient therapist: therapist assistant team is the result of a more unified approach to the delivery of high quality/cost-effective care. This workshop teaches communication guidelines to promote successful relationships; defines important aspects of the therapist: therapist assistant relationship; distinguishes between the responsibilities of the therapist and assistant; and discusses the assistant’s “scope of work” within best practice standards, legal and regulatory statutes.
