EVENTS

OUHSC Rehabilitation Science students and faculty member, Dr. Mark Anderson volunteering at the 2007 Endeavor Games in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Michele Crites-Battié presented her current research concerning the genetic and other determinants of lumbar disc disease at the Inagural Elam-Plowman Endowed Lectureship. The event took place on May 3, 2007.

Dr. Battié joined us from the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Alberta. Dr. Battié presented her current research in the genetics of low back pain. She gave her audience important information on how they can provide better healthcare to Oklahomans with low back pain.

Bill Elam, M.P.H., PT taught in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences from 1971-1996. He demonstrated his commitment to students, practicing clinicians, and the rehabilitation professions by providing funds to establish the Elam-Plowman Chair in Physical Therapy, the Elam-Plowman Physical Therapy Scholarship, and the Lectureship in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Thank you to all who attended. It was a great success!

The University of Oklahoma welcomed Professor Emeritus Billy D. Elam into the Seed Sower Society, which honors donors whose gifts total $1 million or more to OU. The Seed Sower name was selected for this special society because, like OU’s first president, David Ross Boyd, generous donors like Mr. Elam play an extraordinary role in planting seeds of excellence at the University of Oklahoma.

The Seed Sower sculpture was created by OU artist-in-residence Paul Moore and symbolizes the everlasting appreciation for Mr. Elam’s far-reaching generosity to OU and to the Department of Physical Therapy.

Occupational Therapy Students Volunteer and Teach

Several Allied Health OT students and faculty recently demonstrated OU’s spirit of service in their community by participating in two outreach programs. One community service activity had volunteers sacrificing part of their spring break to help clean up debris from this year’s ice storms. The OT group from OU-Tulsa campus helped clear Camp Waluhili’s damaged trees, roofs and power lines.

Students also helped kick off Occupational Therapy month by promoting the Gardening for Health Living Program. Demonstrations on how to build a raised flower bed were presented at Lowe’s in Tulsa, Norman and Midwest City.

Thanks to all who participated in these events. Your sacrifice and efforts to be involved in your community are to be commended!

Some Thunder in OK from Down Under

Several of us in the EIM community on the invitation of Dave Johnson, PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT had the privilege to visit the Tulsa campus of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to spend several days with two master manipulators. Peter Gibbons and Philip Tehan are 1975 graduates of the British School of Osteopathy, which is known for thrust manipulation techniques of exceptional precision. Peter is also a medical doctor, Phillip is also a physiotherapist, and both are in the practice of manual medicine in Melbourne Australia and teach into Victoria University.

Both are fantastic (and perhaps even a bit fanatic) using their "instructional videos" to manipulation techniques with great use of hand skills.
The general audience was Fellows and Fellowship students from all over the US and even the UK. This created an environment of critical thinking and critique of technical application of each other along with MANY MANY side conversations regarding evidence and its implications to practice.

Bill Kinsiinger, MD gave a lunchtime presentation that was a highlite. Many of you know Bill from his Neck 911 Network and his large influence on closing the window on Florida State's Chiropractic school. If you haven't seen his website, you are missing out.

Thanks to Vince Lepak and Dave Johnson for making this such an exemplary opportunity. Look for more great things from this annual offering!

The 4th Annual Spinal Manipulation Update program attracted 60 participants from Oklahoma and 25 other states, and included a special program for students completing their final semester in the MPT program.
