STARS: Technical Training
STARS Technical training began in 1992 and currently consists of basic and intermediate level workshops organized in five different areas: development and intervention, evaluation and assessment, assistive technology, medical issues, and professional issues. Annually, a needs survey is sent to current STARS participants. Based on the results of the annual STARS needs survey, input from the STARS advisory board, results from early intervention program quality assurance, and current best practices, thirty to forty workshops are offered each year. Individual early intervention staff members, through a process of performance evaluation with their supervisors, develop a Personal Development Plan that outlines individual development and training needs. These performance evaluations are based on role descriptions, competencies and quality indicators that are used statewide for early intervention personnel. Training events are also planned around these competencies and indicators.
A statewide master calendar of training events is issued annually. Occasionally events target only early intervention staff, but mostly events target multiple client groups. Staff and contractors of the SoonerStart program, local public schools, and DDSD (Developmental Disabilities Services Division), as well as families accessing services from these agencies may attend STARS trainings at no charge. Others are welcome to register and attend STARS trainings on a “space available” basis for a charge of $50.00 per person per workshop. Families may request a stipend to help pay for child care and travel related expenses, for more information click here. For workshop availability and to register, click here.
